Sarlat-la-Canéda is listed as a town of art and history. It is renowned for owning the highest number of listed or registered historical monuments in the world.

The main monuments and tourist places to see and visit in Sarlat during a holiday in the Dordogne are:

• St Mary's Church converted to a market hall and cultural centre by architect Jean Nouvel
• Saint-Sacerdos Cathedral (12th to 14th c.)
• Récollets Chapel, known as the chapel of the White Penitents (17th c.)
• House of la Boëtie : its elegant Renaissance architecture and being the birthplace of humanist writer and poet Etienne de la Boétie make this house the most famous monument of the old Sarlat.
• The garden of Enfeus (14th to 16th c.): In Europe, an enfeu is a tomb built into the wall of a religious building. It was usually intended for the nobility. It may be superimposed. Gisants (recumbent figures) may be found above and below the enfeu. Several recesses can show the deceased at different stages of his life. Saints may be present also.
• The Lantern of the Dead (12th century), nearly 10 meters high, it is quite rare in France to find one of such height and in such condition: a lantern of the dead is a masonry building of variable shape, usually thin and hollow, and capped by a perforated pavilion into which a lighted lamp was hoisted at nightfall, to serve as a guide for the deceased.
• Executioner's Tower and partial remains of the old ramparts
• The Old Bishopric which nowadays houses the Tourist Office and exhibition halls
• The Theatre Festival.
