Infinitely larger than one might suspect when seen from the outside, the front conceals impressive underground and elevated chambers, the main hall, arms room, kitchen, bedchambers, chapel, cell, dungeon and cellar. In addition to its natural protection, this fortification has many defensive elements: bartizan, drop-box, pieces of ordnance, arrow slits. Of exceptional historical interest and jealously closed to the public, Reignac Castle was opened for tours in April 2006. Authentic prehistoric objects discovered on the site are on display in this important place of heritage.
Exceptionally well preserved and entirely furnished with period furniture, it is the only completely intact “cliff castle” monument in France. |
