1907/2007 :
Centennial of the Discovery
"For 130 years the chasm had been covered and was hardly ever mentioned by the local folks, except in fantastic tales told by the fireside and embellished over the years. Then in 1907, the walls of the vault suddenly collapsed. If it made a huge noise in the chasm itself, it had an even greater impact in the area, and all the local newspapers relayed the news. As there had been a minor collapse in a chestnut forest belonging to Pierre Frances, it occurred to this land owner to have the excavation explored by one Gabriel Galou, a well-know professional well-digger. Owner and manager of the Restaurant du Paradis located at the Roc de Tayac, the man was above all an adventurer and a dare-devil! So it was that on Sunday 10th March 1907 this Gabriel Galou was the first man to enter, alone, the newly rediscovered chasm. After setting up his well-digging equipment, he let himself down into the abyss by means of ropes, until he reached the uneven ground formed by the top of this huge cone of scree"
This is the story told by
Gabriel Lafon, a poet from Le Bugue
